*********************************************************************************************A Letter from one of Sam's Photography Interns
This beautiful letter was written by Elisabeth Green to Todd Holden, Sam's dad:
Hey Todd,
I'm not sure how to start this. Sam was an incredible force in my life - he took me under his wing when I desperately needed it. I worked with him and learned from him for almost two years during my time at Towson, but I never stopped really learning from him. I probably won't stop learning from him, even now. There are so many memories that I have stored away, and cherish. My graduation present from Sam was a photoshoot with my entire family. My grandmother is the most important member of my family to me, and I didn't have any photos with her. I don't know if I have the words to describe how much that day meant to me, but I'm going to try. A few weeks before graduation, we were working at the studio, and Sam had asked me what my father was planning on getting me for my graduation gift. He and I had talked often of our lives and their unique complications, and he knew that my family life wasn't awesome. I told him with complete certainty that my father was most likely planning on not getting me anything. He was quiet for a minute, and dropped the subject. About a week before I graduated, he presented to me the idea of what he wanted to give me for graduation. He told me that since my dad wasn't going to step up, that he wanted to.
Every member of my family has a print from that day - he made sure of it. My grandmother asks about him... a huge print that he made for her hangs in her living room of her with all of her grandchildren.
I treasured that day more than anyone can imagine. No one had ever been good to me like that. Sam owed me nothing, but treated me like gold anyway.
Even after my time in school was done, and I started working as an assistant on the regular, Sam and I kept in touch. Even after I decided to pursue a career as a martial arts instructor, Sam made it clear that he was damn proud of what I was doing anyway, even when it had nothing to do with photo.
I think the most important things he taught me had more to do with how to live life and treat the people in it.
The salt and pepper shakers in my kitchen are the ones that he snagged for me at a food shoot we did a few years ago. They were special to me before, but I can tell you now that I will never own more important salt and pepper shakers than those.
Your son was and will continue to be an incredible shaping force in my life.
If you need anything, Todd, please let me know.******************************************************************************************
